Members of the community cherish the abundance of entertainment, recreation, and leisure activities available to them, and the attractions in Carmel make it a beloved vacation destination for tourists as well.

During your next outing in Carmel, add a few of these top five attractions to your itinerary for a fun-filled day on the coast made of memories you’ll surely cherish.

Carmel Beach

At the foot of Ocean Avenue, Carmel-By-The-Sea

Stretching for miles across the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Carmel Beach is definitely one of the most beloved attractions for anyone spending time in the neighborhood. The area can get busy during the peak season. However, it still manages to maintain a peaceful ambiance and is considered the perfect spot to soak in the warm California sun. There are plenty of places to lounge in the sand or swim in the waves, and watersports are quite popular, too, with surfing being a favorite pastime for locals.

To soak in the area differently, Scenic Road lies parallel to the beach and is a wonderful place to marvel at the scenery on a relaxing drive. There are paths for walking, jogging, or biking, and when it comes to sunsets over the waterfront, it’s one of the top spots in the region. Carmel Beach also lies at the foot of Ocean Avenue, which is lined with cute places to eat and shop. Exploring this area is an absolute must-do when visiting Carmel.

Garland Ranch Regional Park

700 West Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley

For lovers of the great outdoors, there is no better place to head than Garland Ranch Regional Park. The lush area extends from the banks of the beautiful Carmel River all the way up to the heights of the breathtaking Santa Lucia mountains, offering incredible terrain to encounter at every inch between. There are loads of wildlife to spot and hundreds of plant species throughout the many trails, which attract people near and far during every season.

While hiking is the most popular way to explore the park, it certainly isn’t the only way. There are areas for mountain biking too, and for equestrians, horseback riding through the landscapes is always a blast. Dogs are also welcome and allowed to run around off-leash, making it a go-to destination for pet owners.

The Village

The Village of Carmel is a lovely walkable district best known for its fantastic wine tastings and storybook setting. With over a dozen tasting rooms in the area, strolling around and sipping on local batches while shopping for bottles to bring home is a favorite way to spend a day for residents and visitors alike. Trendy eateries, chic boutiques, and antique shops can be found throughout the area as well, so it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours eating and shopping. There are also phenomenal art galleries showcasing work by both local and international talent.

Historic homes and buildings line its streets, showcasing unique architectural styles with Spanish influences dating back to the early 1900s. There are also loads of passageways to explore, giving character to its layout and making each walk a cheerful experience where lots of hidden gems can be discovered. The district truly looks like a page out of a storybook and is famous for its fairytale vibe. Its quaint courtyards and gardens add a decorative touch, and there are even walking tours of the area for those interested in learning more about its most iconic structures.

Carmel Vineyards

Carmel is known for being a top California wine destination, so its vineyards are undoubtedly one of the most beloved attractions in Carmel for locals and tourists alike. On top of all the terrific tasting rooms in its downtown area, there are outstanding vineyards all over Carmel Valley that are loads of fun to attend. An excellent variety is served for connoisseurs to sample, including pinot noir, cabernet, chardonnay, and zinfandel.

A spectacular place to start is Carmel Valley Road, which is lined with local establishments. Folktale Winery and Vineyards is one of the most frequented along the strip, which is located in a stunning French chateau. Another hotspot on the road is Bernardus Winery, which happens to be the very first tasting room Carmel Valley ever had. The countryside setting of the region offers a blissful vibe, and all of the shops sell bottles to bring back home to savor the memories later.

The Carmel Mission

3080 Rio Road, Carmel-By-The-Sea

The Carmel Mission captures the rich culture of the neighborhood’s past and is a fascinating place to explore. As a National Historic Landmark that was established in 1771, its official name is “Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo,” and it was led by Father Junípero Serra as one of the first Spanish missions built in California. It was restored in the 1940s and still possesses many of its original artifacts.

While the church remains an active parish and holds regular mass services, its historic grounds now double as a museum as well and offer tours. Strolling by its gardens, chapel, and fountain provides a lovely glimpse into the 18th century, which can be done individually or as a group. The Carmel Mission also hosts events throughout the year for all ages to attend.
