For anyone who lives inside the Del Monte Forest, Monterey Car Week reads less like a ten-day event and more like a slowly tightening perimeter. The calendar says Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 16, 2026, but the version of the week that changes what your driveway feels like, whether you can walk down to Stillwater Cove, and how long it takes to get a coffee on Forest Lake Road is much shorter than that.
This year adds a wrinkle. The 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance closes Monterey Car Week 2026 on Sunday, August 16, the diamond anniversary of the event that has set the global concours standard since 1950. Anniversary years pull larger crowds and earlier arrivals. Reading the week the way a resident needs to read it, rather than the way a visitor guide presents it, is the difference between a good ten days at home and a stranded one.
The Week Has Two Halves, and They Don't Feel the Same
The first stretch of Car Week is quieter than its reputation. Friday's kickoff is a free evening car show on Alvarado Street in downtown Monterey, and the weekend that follows belongs to the Monterey Pre-Reunion and Corkscrew Hillclimb at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9. Both of those happen well outside the Forest. If you time errands to Carmel or Pacific Grove before Wednesday, you will not notice much.
The clamp begins on Wednesday, August 12, when the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic parades in to Casa Palmero after roughly 1,500 miles down the Pacific coast. By Thursday morning, the perimeter is fully live.

What Actually Happens on Portola Road Thursday Morning
Thursday, August 13 is the day locals underestimate. The Tour begins in Pebble Beach, traces 17-Mile Drive and Highway One to Big Sur, and then returns to Pebble Beach to cross the Finish line, and a car that successfully completes the Tour gets the nod if it later ties in class competition at the Concours. That means every entrant with a shot at a class win is on the road, and the staging area is a block from home for anyone north of the Lodge.
The official schedule is precise: cars line up on Portola Road at 7:00 am and the Tour departs at 9:30 am. If you want to see the field without buying a ticket, this is the best free morning of the week. If you want to leave the Forest by car, do it before 6:45 or after 10:00. The cars head along 17-Mile Drive and Highway 1 to Big Sur, returning to Pebble Beach around noon, so the Highway 1 southbound corridor stays affected until early afternoon.
Concours Village opens the same day. It sits across from the Pebble Beach Auctions at Forest Lake Road and Stevenson Drive, open to the public at no cost, with sponsor displays, official Ride and Drives, and this year's Concours merchandise. For a resident, that is a five-minute walk from many homes in the central Forest and a genuinely pleasant Thursday afternoon before the Saturday crowds arrive.
The Stillwater Cove Question
If you use the Beach Club or the Coastal Access program, the dates that matter are not the ones on the tourism sites. Pebble Beach Company has posted specific changes: from August 10 to August 17, 2026, due to the Concours d'Elegance, Coastal Access will be CLOSED August 13 through 16, and equipment drop-off at the Beach Club parking lot will also be unavailable during this time. The shoulders around that window still function but with restrictions: on August 10, 11, and 12, parking will be available at the 17th Hedgerow and the Casa Palmero garage by reservation only, at (831) 625-8536, and on August 17, the 17th Hedgerow parking will be closed and Casa Palmero garage parking will be by reservation only.
Practically, if you kayak or paddle out of Stillwater, your last clean morning is Wednesday, August 12, and your first clean morning back is Tuesday, August 18. Book the Casa Palmero garage the week you read this, not the week before Car Week.
The Access Rule Everyone Gets Slightly Wrong
The most common misread about Car Week is when 17-Mile Drive actually closes. The official language from the Concours: 17-Mile Drive will be closed to general tourist traffic on Saturday and Sunday of Concours weekend, and only residents, guests of residents, and attendees of Pebble Beach events will be allowed access through the gates.
Two things follow from that.
First, if you have friends flying in for the Concours, the ticket is their gate pass. Visitors attending the events must show a ticket to enter the gates, and event attendees are encouraged to enter Pebble Beach through the Spanish Bay gate in Pacific Grove for ease of parking on the coastline. Sending house guests to the Highway 1 gate on Sunday morning is the classic rookie mistake.
Second, the closure is a weekend closure, not a week closure. Thursday and Friday, 17-Mile Drive still passes tourist traffic. That is why Thursday feels congested even though nothing headline is happening inside the gates: the Tour is running, Concours Village is open, and the paying public is still driving in for the view.
Free, Ticketless, and Walkable From Home
The best resident-only pleasures of Car Week are almost all free and almost all within walking distance if you live in the central Forest:
- The Tour d'Elegance start line, Portola Road at Stevenson Drive, 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
- The Motoring Classic arrival at Casa Palmero, Wednesday afternoon.
- Concours Village, Forest Lake Road at Stevenson Drive, Thursday through Sunday, no charge.
- RetroAuto and the Pebble Beach Classic Car Forum, adjacent to Concours Village, also open to walk-in visitors.
- Tour route viewing anywhere along 17-Mile Drive Thursday morning, before you commit to your errands.
For dinner in the evenings after the crowds thin, the Sunday of the Concours is the one night the reservation calendars for the Lodge and Spanish Bay dining rooms are effectively frozen. Book any of those anchor rooms Monday of Concours week or earlier. The Spanish Bay bagpiper at the fire pits still plays through the week, and it is one of the more surreal ways to end a Thursday when the Tour cars have gone quiet.
Where Car Week Isn't
Part of living well through the week is knowing where the pressure isn't. Wednesday and Friday belong to other towns.
Mid-week brings a charity concours in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea with Concours for a Cause, the opening of the Bonhams Laguna Seca Auction, and an evening of cars under the lights at Asilomar. Thursday layers on Aston Martins downtown Carmel for Astons on the Avenue, tiny cars along Pacific Grove's Lighthouse Avenue for The Little Car Show, and the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic rolling into town, then Motorlux lighting up the Monterey Jet Center after dark. Friday, the center of gravity shifts to Carmel Valley for The Quail at Quail Lodge and Golf Club.
Any of those days is a reasonable escape hatch. A late lunch on Lighthouse Avenue Thursday afternoon and you have effectively skipped the tightest hours in the Forest without missing the week.
The 75th, and Why This Year Feels Different
Two forces make 2026 read differently than a normal Concours year. The first is scale: Ferrari is the primary featured marque this year, with a tribute focused on Ferrari's Le Mans overall winners, NART competition cars, and Vignale-bodied road cars, and Carrozzeria Vignale is the featured coachbuilder. Ferrari anniversaries and Le Mans-winner classes historically pull the largest walk-up crowds the Concours sees.
The second is timing. Vince Finaldi takes over as Concours President in October 2026 following Sandra Button's 40-year tenure, and the 2026 edition is her last as full operational lead. That gives the diamond year a valedictory quality the market has noticed. Expect earlier arrivals on Wednesday and Thursday, and expect the Tour d'Elegance field to draw a bigger sidewalk crowd than the 2024 or 2025 versions.
For a resident, the practical translation is simple. Move your important errands to Monday or Tuesday. Take Thursday morning slowly and enjoy the Tour on foot. Treat Friday as a Carmel Valley day. Stay home Saturday. On Sunday, either use your ticket or use the day the way the Forest was originally designed to be used, with a long walk on a coastline no visitor can reach.
Anniversary years pass. The one you can walk to from your own front door does not come around again for a while.
